Tritium Self Luminous
Tritium exit signs are also known as self luminous exit signs because they are entirely internally illuminated and completely self-contained, requiring no external power source. Unlike photoluminescent signs which require that there be an ambient light to "charge" the sign, self luminous exit signs rely on a radioluminescent phosphor which is acted upon by the electrons in the gas tritium to illuminate the letters of the exit sign. Self luminous exit signs are available with 10 or 20 year life spans.
Self luminous exit signs do not consume energy and have zero energy costs. Because self luminous exit signs do not require AC wiring, they also have minimal installation costs. Self luminous exit signs also have no maintenance costs because they have no mechanical or electrical components.
