For added versatility, the CA-U includes an extra faceplate and matching red and green diffusers, enabling single- or double-face configurations as needed. Installation is straightforward with the included universal mounting canopy, which supports surface wall, ceiling, or side mounting. Construction
The CA-U series sign features a compact, decorative design with a die-cast aluminum housing. Includes universal faceplates for both single and double face configurations, and displays 6-inch EXIT letter height with a 3/4-inch stroke and optional knockout chevron directional arrows.
Illumination
The CA-U series illumination is achieved using long-lasting, energy-efficient ultra-bright red or green LEDs. A color-matched diffuser eliminates hot spots and striations, ensuring optimal light distribution. The sign features a field-selectable red or green LED circuit board. The default factory setting is red.
Emergency Operation
Upon failure of the normal utility power, an internal solidstate transfer switch automatically provides uninterrupted emergency operation for at least 90 minutes. The fully automatic solid-state, two-rate charger initiates battery charging to recharge a discharged battery in 24 hours.
Battery - Battery Backup
The CA-U series is designed with a maintenance-free 3.2V 400mAh LiFePO4 battery that provides a minimum emergency duration of 90 minutes, with a full recharge time of 24 hours. By default, the CA-U series exit sign comes in Battery Backup operation mode; however, it can be easily switched to Self-Testing mode if needed (see the Self-Testing section for more information).

Self-Testing Option
The CA-U exit sign features a unique internal toggle switch—accessible by removing the front cover—that allows the user to select Self-Testing operation mode. In this mode, the unit continuously monitors AC power, battery supply voltage, emergency lamp condition, and the charging circuit. If a fault is detected, the onboard indicator will display the issue and update the status once corrected. Additionally, unit also automatically performs the NFPA-required monthly and annual self-tests, providing reliable performance and simplifying code compliance. Refer to the user manual for detailed instructions.
Electrical Components
Universal voltage input of 120-277VAC with 50/60Hz operation. The unit features an LED display that indicates AC power status (AC/ON) and includes an external push-button test switch for quick operational checks of battery backup functionality. It utilizes surge-protected, solid-state circuitry and includes a trickle charge function once the battery is fully charged, as well as over-discharge protection to extend battery life and ensure long-term reliability.
